English barns were brought to New England by the colonists and are, built on fieldstone foundations. They usually have their main entrance on the long side. Bank barns evolved during the 1800's and derived their name from the fact that they were often built into the bank of a hillside. These barns have more than one level and the entrance door is on the gable side.
